Below, we go over a few possibilities you can start with and the benefits of using native plants. If you’re interested in upgrading your landscape with native plants, give Francisco’s Tree and Landscaping a call to get started.
Why Choose Native Plants?
Native plants are the way to go if you want a landscape that will thrive without a lot of extra aid. Given that they have evolved to the soil and climate of their surroundings, native plants are inherently healthier. Thus, it will be easier and less expensive to maintain native plants over the long term.
Both the ecosystem and local fauna benefit from the use of native plants. They foster habitats for tiny organisms that maintain the health of your soil as well as pollinators like bees, birds, and butterflies. Native plants keep your yard healthy and enhance the air quality around you because they require less watering and fertilizer.
Plants Native to Omaha
In the Great Plains, plants with hardy root systems that are better adapted to drought thrive in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa. These are a few types of plants that will not only look beautiful but flourish in your garden.
TREES
- Eastern Redbud - in the spring, the Eastern Redbud sprouts beautiful purple blooms. These trees can grow 20 to 30 feet tall and are a favorite spot for butterflies and bees.
- Serviceberry - This understated tree is perfect if you don’t have enough space for a towering addition. Serviceberry trees top out at around 15 to 25 feet. Birds love their red berries and are also edible for human consumption!
- Oak - a mighty Oak will stand the test of time. If you’re looking to make a statement, most species of Oak trees will grow between 40 to 80 feet. Red, Bur, and Chinkapin Oak all thrive in the area.
FLOWERS
- Coneflower - This native wildflower grows various shades of pinkish-purple petals during the late spring through summer and is a major goldfinch and butterfly attraction.
- Rough-Stemmed Goldenrod - This plant sprouts dainty yellow flowers from September to October, making it a great way to keep your garden pollinated through fall.
- Butterfly Milkweed - This flower is ideal for smaller gardens, sports orange blooms, and is the perfect home for Monarch caterpillars.
